Brake FAQs
We’re ready to help you with all of your car care needs here at Ole Ben Franklin Motors, and part of that means answering all of your questions about the systems and parts that keep your vehicle running smoothly. If you have questions about your brakes, like “How many miles do brake pads last?”, we can tell you what you need to know.
Let’s look at some of the most common questions we hear and see if your question has already been answered! And to answer that first question, brake pads generally last around 25,000 to 50,000 miles.
How Often Should I Have my Brakes Inspected?
It’s wise to have your brakes inspected at least once per year. There are many different parts that have to work together to keep your braking system responsive, and responsive brakes keep you safe. A yearly inspection makes it easier for our mechanics to spot potential issues and make fixes that keep you safer on the road.
What Parts Make Up My Braking System?
When you hit the brake pedal in your car, all of these parts spring into action:
- Brake pads
- Calipers
- Brake rotors
- Brake lines
- Master brake cylinder
There are some other important parts as well, but these are some of the most important.
What Do Brake Pads Do?
The brake pads press against the brake rotors and cause friction. Without this friction, your car will not slow down or stop. As we mentioned, these do wear down over time and eventually need to be replaced.
What are Calipers?
Calipers create pressure in your braking system and help stop your rotors from spinning. They need brake fluid to do their important job.
When Do I Change my Brake Fluid?
Generally, brake fluid is changed every four years or so, but our mechanics can keep an eye on your entire braking system and see if you need new fluid before due to a leak or another issue.
