How to Check Transmission Fluid

Your transmission is what moves your vehicle forward, making it one of the most important parts in your Mitsubishi. It’s important to know how to check your transmission fluid and how often to check your transmission fluid to ensure no problems develop due to low fluid levels or old fluid that needs to be replaced. Our service team at Ole Ben Franklin Motors will walk you through how to measure fluid levels, add transmission fluid checks to your monthly maintenance schedule, and how often you need to visit a Farragut area service center to get your transmission replaced. See below for details.

Checking Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step Guide

Follow the steps below to learn how to check your transmission fluid:

  1. Allow your engine to warm up for a few minutes as the engine needs to be warm to get an accurate read of your transmission fluid levels. Put your car in Park before opening the car hood.
  2. Check your owner’s manual to find the location of your car’s transmission dipstick. The transmission dipstick is on the right of the car oil dipstick in most FWD cars.
  3. Once you’ve located the transmission fluid dipstick, remove it and glide your thumb and forefinger across it. Lift your fingers off it to see what color it is. It should be clear with a pink hue. If it looks brown or black, you need to visit a service center to have it replaced. Wipe off the dipstick with a rag. Reinsert the dipstick into your car. If the transmission fluid is below the “full” marking, use a funnel to refill it. Be careful not to exceed the “full” line.

If you’re having trouble checking your car’s transmission fluid, call our service center for over the phone guidance.

Checking the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

If you can’t find your dipstick then check your owner’s manual again to see if your car has a sealer transmission. Sealed transmissions preserve transmission fluid for longer but cannot be accessed manually. Sealed transmissions need to be checked by a service technician to prevent damaging your vehicle and causing expensive repairs. The maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual will tell you how often your transmission fluid needs to be checked and replaced at a service center near Sevierville.
